Lymphedema Lymphedema

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema, also referred to as lymphatic obstruction, is a chronic condition characterized by the accumulation of excess fluid in the tissues of the arms or legs, resulting in swelling, medically known as edema. This swelling may affect one or both arms and legs.

The lymphatic system comprises lymph vessels and lymph nodes, responsible for draining fluids from the body tissues. These fluids carry immune cells, toxins, and other waste products to the lymph nodes. The lymph vessels then return filtered lymph fluids to the bloodstream, maintaining fluid balance in the body.

However, when the lymphatic system malfunctions, it leads to the swelling of tissues in the arms or legs due to fluid retention. This swelling occurs as a result of blockage within the lymphatic system, hindering proper drainage of lymph fluids. This condition is identified as lymphedema.

What are the causes of Lymphedema?

There are two types of lymphedema: Primary (or Hereditary) and Secondary Lymphedema, each stemming from distinct causes.

Primary lymphedema, which is much less common that Secondary lymphedema, is genetically inherited and can be passed down within families. It is triggered by abnormalities in the genes governing the lymphatic system.

Secondary lymphedema, more widespread than primary lymphedema, arises from various factors, including:

  1. Cancer Surgery: During cancer treatment, lymph nodes may be removed to halt the spread of cancer cells through the lymphatic system. This surgical intervention can disrupt lymphatic function and result in lymphedema.
  2. Infection: Infections affecting the lymph nodes can impede the normal flow of lymphatic fluids, heightening the risk of developing lymphedema.
  3. Radiation Therapy: The use of radiation to target and eradicate cancer cells may inadvertently damage nearby healthy tissues, including the lymphatic system, leading to the onset of lymphedema.
  4. Inflammatory Diseases: Conditions such as eczema and rheumatoid arthritis, characterized by inflammation of tissues, have the potential to harm the lymphatic system, thereby contributing to lymphedema.

What are the symptoms of Lymphedema?

Lymphedema typically occurs as swelling in the legs, arms, fingers, or toes, with potential involvement of facial tissues and the neck.

Additional symptoms of lymphedema include:

In cases where the head and neck are affected, symptoms may extend to nasal congestion, ear discomfort, and visual impairment. Furthermore, complications may arise, impacting functions such as swallowing, breathing, speech, and saliva control.
