An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is one of the most common knee ligament injuries, particularly among people who participate in sports involving running, jumping, sudden stops or changes in direction. At Healthpoint in Abu Dhabi, our orthopedic and sports medicine specialists diagnose and treat ACL injuries, helping patients restore knee stability, movement and confidence.
Treatment depends on the severity of the injury, the level of knee instability and the patient's lifestyle and activity goals. While some ACL injuries can be managed without surgery, ACL reconstruction surgery may be recommended when the ligament is completely torn or the knee remains unstable.
The anterior cruciate ligament is one of the major ligaments within the knee. It connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia) and plays an important role in keeping the knee stable during movement.
ACL injuries commonly occur when the knee twists suddenly, during a rapid change in direction, after an awkward landing from a jump or following direct trauma to the knee. An ACL can be partially or completely torn and may also be injured together with the meniscus, cartilage or other knee ligaments.
Symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the injury but may include:
Persistent pain, swelling or instability following a knee injury should be assessed by an orthopedic specialist.
Diagnosis usually begins with a clinical assessment. Your orthopedic specialist will discuss how the injury occurred and examine the movement and stability of your knee.
An MRI scan may be recommended to confirm an ACL tear and assess whether other structures within the knee, such as the meniscus or cartilage, have also been injured.
Not every ACL injury requires surgery. Some patients may be treated with physiotherapy and rehabilitation, particularly when the knee remains stable and their normal activities do not place significant rotational demands on the joint.
ACL reconstruction may be recommended for patients with persistent knee instability, complete ACL tears, associated knee injuries, or those who want to return to sports and activities involving running, pivoting or rapid changes in direction.
Treatment is personalized according to the injury, age, activity level and individual goals of each patient.
ACL reconstruction is performed to restore stability to a knee with a damaged anterior cruciate ligament. The damaged ACL is typically reconstructed using a tendon graft.
Different graft options are available, and your orthopedic surgeon will recommend an appropriate approach based on factors such as your injury, age, activity level and sporting requirements.
ACL reconstruction is generally performed using arthroscopic, minimally invasive techniques. A small camera and specialized surgical instruments are introduced through small incisions, allowing the surgeon to reconstruct the ligament and assess other structures within the knee.
Rehabilitation is an important part of recovery following ACL reconstruction. Physiotherapy focuses on gradually restoring knee movement, strength, balance, stability and functional performance.
Recovery varies between patients, and returning to sport should be gradual. Your orthopedic surgeon and rehabilitation team will assess your progress and advise when it is appropriate to return to higher-level exercise and sporting activities.
