Knee replacement surgery can help relieve pain and restore mobility for people with severe knee joint damage, particularly when symptoms from osteoarthritis or other degenerative conditions are no longer adequately managed with non-surgical treatments.
At Healthpoint in Abu Dhabi, our orthopedic surgeons perform conventional and robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery, including procedures supported by MAKO SmartRobotics™ and VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution. These advanced technologies help surgeons personalize surgical planning and support precision during knee replacement procedures.
Knee replacement surgery involves removing damaged surfaces of the knee joint and replacing them with artificial components designed to restore joint function and movement.
Depending on the extent of joint damage, your orthopedic surgeon may recommend a total knee replacement, in which the affected surfaces of the knee joint are replaced, or a partial knee replacement, where only the damaged section of the knee is treated.
Knee replacement may be considered for patients experiencing severe or persistent knee pain, stiffness, reduced mobility or difficulty carrying out everyday activities despite appropriate non-surgical treatment.
In conventional knee replacement surgery, the orthopedic surgeon uses established surgical instruments and techniques to prepare the knee and position the implant based on the patient's anatomy and surgical plan.
Conventional knee replacement remains an established treatment for advanced knee joint damage. Your orthopedic surgeon will determine the most appropriate surgical approach based on your condition, anatomy and individual requirements.
Robotic-assisted knee replacement combines the expertise of the orthopedic surgeon with technology designed to support personalized planning and precision during surgery.
The robot does not perform the operation independently. The orthopedic surgeon remains in control throughout the procedure, while the robotic system provides information and guidance to assist with surgical planning, bone preparation and implant positioning.
Healthpoint offers two robotic-assisted technologies for knee replacement: MAKO SmartRobotics™ and VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution.
MAKO SmartRobotics™ uses a CT scan to create a 3D model of the patient's knee anatomy before surgery. This allows the orthopedic surgeon to develop a personalized surgical plan based on the patient's individual anatomy.
During surgery, MAKO provides guidance within the planned surgical area, helping the surgeon prepare the bone and position the knee implant according to the personalized plan.
MAKO technology can be used for selected total and partial knee replacement procedures.
VELYS™ takes a different approach to robotic-assisted knee replacement. Rather than relying on a pre-operative CT scan, the system gathers information about the patient's knee during surgery.
This real-time intraoperative data helps the orthopedic surgeon assess the patient's anatomy, joint movement and soft-tissue balance and supports accurate positioning of the knee implant.
VELYS™ is designed to assist the surgeon during total knee replacement while allowing the surgical plan to be informed by data collected during the procedure.
MAKO and VELYS™ use different approaches to support robotic-assisted knee replacement. MAKO uses CT-based 3D planning before surgery, while VELYS™ uses real-time data collected during the operation without requiring a pre-operative CT scan.
Neither technology replaces the expertise of the orthopedic surgeon. Your surgeon will determine whether conventional or robotic-assisted knee replacement is appropriate and, where robotic surgery is recommended, which technology best suits your individual condition and surgical requirements.
Recovery is supported by a structured rehabilitation program designed to gradually restore movement, strength and function. Physiotherapy plays an important role in helping patients regain mobility and return to everyday activities.
Recovery times vary depending on the type of surgery, the patient's overall health and individual progress.
